North East Firm Raids National Rival For New Recruit

Simon Matthews

An experienced litigator has joined the ranks of Crutes’ first-rate specialist claims team from national rival DLA Piper. Simon Matthews, 41, joins Crutes from the top-five UK law firm, and brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge in specialist industrial disease claims.

He has worked for DLA for the past three years, having previously worked for national firm BLM on Teesside.

Simon has specialised in defending claims for a wide range of industrial diseases. From the well-known Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) claims in heavy industry to the many dermatological and respiratory claims which are now on the increase in light industry, manufacturing and other non- traditional work-places.

He is a lobby officer for the national Forum of Insurance Lawyers (FOIL) Executive and is a well-known expert in his field. He joins Crutes existing insurance litigation team which already boasts nationally-renowned lawyers David Drewe and Paul Hughes.

Simon’s appointment will further establish Crutes as the leading insurance litigation practice in the North East of England and boost the department’s numbers to 30.

Simon commented on his appointment: “When I made the decision to return to the North East, Crutes’ name topped a list of firms in the region with the necessary credentials and reputation in my area of work.

“They are undoubtedly the leading light in insurance litigation, and having worked for a firm with the reputation DLA enjoys, I wanted to ensure I was joining an outfit of equal calibre when I returned to the North East.”

Head of Crutes specialist claims team, David Drewe, said: “We are delighted to welcome someone of Simon’s calibre to what is already a very strong team. We are well regarded in the North East and across the UK for defendant insurance work and it is important that we continue to add strength and depth to our team to remain ahead of the competition.

”Simon’s skills, experience and contacts will be of great benefit to our clients - and to the future growth plans of the practice.”
