Solicitor Wins War of Words

May 2004

Solicitor Wins War of WordsONE of Crutes Mounseys solicitors has proved he has a way with words and certainly knows the long and short of a variety of topics.

David Bawn, who works at Crutes Mounseys in Carlisle, was able to see the funny side and the ironic side of a subject he recently had to debate upon – Tall Men vs Short Men. David, who is from Morpeth, had to point out all the good points of being a tall man, with just one small problem. He is 5ft 4ins tall.

Nevertheless the private client solicitor went head to head - well nearly - with his rival David Towns who was arguing the case for shorter men, despite standing 5ft 11ins tall himself.

But after a titanic battle David, who is 25, won over the audience with his arguments for tall men being better and walked off with the top prize of a bottle of champagne and a day at the races for his team.

He said: “There was a whole host of joke topics throughout the night including Dogs vs Cats and Newcastle vs Liverpool. After the main four topics the two teams were tied, so there was a tiebreaker. That was when I had to argue the case for tall men being better than small men.

“My main argument was that tall men were seen in the light of the classic, `tall, dark and handsome’ and that they were able to reach things from shelves. It seemed to win the crowd over and they voted my argument as the winner.”

The debate was part of an evening organized by the Young Professionals’ Forum in Newcastle by Ward Hadaway and Lycetts.

David’s role at Crutes Mounseys sees him working in wills and probate, inheritance tax planning, family trusts and property.

Crutes Law Firm, one of the largest practices in the North of England, merged with Mounseys, one of the oldest firms in Carlisle, at the start of the year.

Crutes Mounseys has a large and growing private client department and there is a great demand for legal advice on estate planning and wealth management.

Crutes is a law firm with offices in Carlisle, Newcastle and Middlesbrough. The multi-site practice has grown steadily over recent years and employs 160 staff with 18 partners.
